New taxes on ride-sharing tripsA new proposal to combat traffic congestion in the city by increasing taxes on certain ride-hailing rides was passed by city council recently. The plan, that of Mayor Lori Lightfoot, increases the city’s taxes on single-passenger trips and will lower the tax on shared rides. It will also have new surcharges placed on weekday rides downtown to help raise $40 million for the new year. Some city officials and ride-sharing providers accused each other unfairly targeting low income customers. The city of Chicago’s fatalities from car crashes have dipped lower this year. A few years ago, the city announced a new plan called “vision zero,” which had the goal of reducing car crashes and eventually eliminating serious injuries and fatalities completely by 2026. Traffic fatalities have gone down by almost a third from 108 deaths to 77 deaths. Although, it’s difficult to tell if its due to the new initiative, better cars or coincidence.
